Doing laser hair removal sessions too close together: good or bad idea ?

Doing laser hair removal sessions too close together: good or bad idea?

We often hear this during consultations:

“Can I do my sessions closer together to go faster?”

And honestly… we understand.

When starting a series of permanent hair removal treatments, you’re eager to see results. Less shaving, smoother skin, more comfort… you want it to happen as quickly as possible. Whether it’s for a trip, summer, or simply to feel better, the desire to speed up the process is completely normal.

But in reality, doing sessions closer together does not speed up results. On the contrary, it makes little to no difference.

What actually happens when the laser works

When we talk about the “root” of the hair, it’s a simplification. In reality, the key structures are mainly the dermal papilla, which acts as the vascular control center of the follicle, as well as the bulb and the bulge region, where the cells essential for hair regeneration are located.

The principle used in photoepilation is called selective photothermolysis. In simple terms, the melanin in the hair absorbs light energy. This energy is then converted into heat, which can locally reach temperatures high enough to damage the targeted follicular structures.

This heat spreads to the deeper areas of the follicle and triggers a true of biological effects.

  • Once the heat adequately reaches these structures, the following occurs:
  • thermal denaturation of proteins
  • alteration of cellular membranes
  • cessation of metabolic activity in the matrix cells that produce the hair

Around the dermal papilla, the microvascular network may also undergo thermal coagulation. The small nourishing capillaries contract, close, and the supply of oxygen and nutrients is interrupted.

The follicle then enters a state of local ischemia, followed by irreversible degeneration. If the follicular stem cells in the bulge are sufficiently affected, the follicle loses its ability to regenerate over time.

In other words: once the follicle has been thermally destroyed and deprived of its blood supply, there is no longer much to target immediately afterward.

After the session: what actually happens?

To simplify what was explained above, here is what happens after a proper session:

  1. The follicle is affected The heat generated by IPL travels down into the follicle and damages the structures responsible for hair production.
  2. The hair “stops living” The cells that produce the hair no longer function. The follicle no longer actively produces new hair.
  3. The connection gradually breaks The hair is no longer nourished. It loses its connection to the deeper structures and gradually becomes inactive.
  4. The hair is expelled Over the next 1 to 3 weeks, it rises and naturally sheds with the skin’s renewal process.

Important: this is not regrowth. It is simply the treated hair being eliminated.

Why doing another session too soon is ineffective

If you do another session 1 or 2 weeks later, there is simply no new useful target. The follicle that was already treated is either destroyed or in degeneration. It no longer has real cellular activity to target.

The visible hair, on the other hand, is already biologically disconnected. It no longer efficiently conducts heat to the deeper structures.

And the other follicles, those in the resting phase, are not ready yet. They have not emerged or become active enough to be treated effectively.

Result: you are not acting on more hair. You are only adding heat to the skin, which may create unnecessary inflammation without improving results.

What you really need to understand

Laser hair removal does not work by going faster. It works by respecting the right timing.

The intervals between sessions are essential to allow the body to do its work:

  • eliminate already treated hairs
  • allow the skin to recover
  • let new hairs enter the active growth phase

This is exactly what makes each session truly effective in a well-planned treatment series. Shortening the intervals may seem logical, but biologically, it makes no difference. Once the follicle has been affected, everything is already in progress: cell destruction, interruption of nourishment, and hair expulsion.

Going over the area too soon does not produce better results.
