Laser IPL
You can find all kinds of information online about hair length before a session. Some say you need to be freshly shaved, others say you should let it grow… it’s normal to feel confused.
From our perspective, our goal is to make treatments as effective as possible, but also realistic. We understand that clients arrive with different hair lengths depending on their schedule, routine, or simply their daily life.
Yes, there is an ideal length… but that doesn’t mean everything else doesn’t work.
When the hair is longer than necessary (for example more than 2 mm), part of the IPL laser energy is absorbed at the surface before reaching deeper levels.
Concretely:
That said, the energy is not completely “lost.” Thanks to the principle of photothermolysis, heat transfers along the hair down to the follicle. So even if the hair is longer, the energy still reaches the bulb.
What may happen:
The treatment remains effective, sometimes even very effective, but it is slightly less optimal.
On the other hand, when the hair is shaved very recently, to the point of being almost invisible, the session can still be performed without any issue.
The follicle still contains melanin, so the treatment works.
However, from our perspective, it is not ideal.
From a more technical standpoint, when the hair is very short, there is less accessible pigmented mass. This means less melanin exposed at the surface, which slightly reduces the overall amount of energy absorbed.
The hair also acts as a thermal reservoir: it captures heat and diffuses it toward deeper structures. When it is very short:
Heat does not only travel toward the root. It spreads in all directions: toward the surrounding skin, toward the surface, and toward the follicle. With very short hair, a greater proportion of heat may dissipate laterally instead of being directed toward the bulb.
Conversely, when the hair is slightly present:
The hair acts somewhat like a “thermal antenna”: it captures, concentrates, and directs energy more effectively toward the base.
That said, in practice, the difference remains relatively small. Freshly shaved hair can still deliver very good results and is widely used.
So yes, it works very well… but it is simply not the most optimal condition.
The best length is simple:
This is typically what you get after shaving 24 to 48 hours before the session. At this length:
It is the best balance between energy absorption and transmission.
The laser does not target the visible hair… it targets the base of the follicle.
The hair mainly acts as a guide to deliver heat to the right place.
The hair should be short enough to avoid burning at the surface… but present enough to guide heat to the root.
We know there’s a lot of different information online… and it can quickly become confusing.
